Meet the Artist

Russell Kells

Russell paints in oil, working loosely and directly from life — sweeping landscapes, geothermal colour, and close-up wildlife studies built up with confident, painterly brushwork.

About

Russell's Story

Russell Kells is an oil painter drawn to big, dramatic landscapes and the quieter wildlife studies that sit alongside them. His travels feed the work directly — from the layered ochres and pinks of a canyon wall to the mineral blues and rusts of a geothermal pool, he paints the colour and light of a place as he found it, with loose, confident brushwork that keeps the scene feeling alive rather than overworked. Closer to home, he turns the same eye on small creatures and quiet corners, capturing a chipmunk mid-scurry with the same care he gives a canyon at golden hour. Russell paints from his studio and is a familiar face among the Taupō Art Connection group.
