Meet the Artist
A Taupō pyrography artist who has been wood burning for 26 years — his collection SOUL IS ETERNAL traces the journey of the soul from birth to death.
About
My name is Wayne Hansen. I am an artist, a father of six and a grandfather of four, with Swedish, Scottish and Māori blood. I live in Taupō, New Zealand and have been doing my wood burning (pyrography) for 26 years. At 50 years of age I have come to believe my art comes from the spirit — all I have to do is switch off my conscious thought and connect. It’s a spiritual rather than mentally conscious process.
This collection, SOUL IS ETERNAL, has taken me 12 years to complete. It comprises twelve pieces representing my life and the different stages of the journey from birth to death, including the soul’s journey in the physical plane. In my case, these connections are manifested through my art.
The birds represent spirit, the fern represents soul and the movement from fern to flax is the transition from physical consciousness to spiritual consciousness (Enlightenment). I have created the exhibit to help people become aware of the spirit in us and around us.
